Message from the Honorable D.M. Jayaratne Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

Buddhism is a universal religion and a great philosophy often described as a way of life which becomes more and more useful to a world that is in constant transition due to advances in technology. It has drawn in a large segment of the world population including scholars of repute. It is our responsibility to develop and spread it for the sake of all beings. Sri Lanka has been the center of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries and it has rendered a great service for the preservation and propagation of Buddhism over the past two thousand three hundred years.

The establishment of the Nãgãnanda International Buddhist University at Manelwatta will surely be a great asset in continuing that service in the modern world. I am sure Ven. Dr. Bodagama Chandima Nayaka Thera who is an erudite scholar monk together with his Chief advisor and Chief sponsor Most Ven. Master Chin Kung will make a positive and a demonstrated contribution for the progress of Buddhism not only in this land but also in the countries both eastern and western.

I would boldly say that Buddhism is the future of mankind. The Buddha did not find world as a wicked place. The world was only deluded by the shroud of ignorance.

The Buddhist clergy have been in the forefront in protecting, nurturing and spreading the teaching of the Buddha. They have been the guardian deities of the nation and the dhamma.

I wish all the success for the new international university with the blessings of the Triple-Gem.

D.M. Jayaratne
Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
